Local chicken in nepal

**Local Chicken in Nepal**

Local chicken farming in Nepal is also one of the components of rural income generating activity and traditional animal farming system. Nepal has been widely using local chickens also known as Desi Kukhura for several years now and they are natural breeds. These and many others birds may have other qualities than their adaptability into the current environment they are in; they are culturally, nutritionally, and economically valuable.

#### **Local Chickens Characteristics**
Small scale indigenous birds found in Nepal are reared under free range or backyard system. It is quite robust and can easily endure with little or no input. These birds have high disease tolerance and are suitable for the agro-climatic environments of Nepal including the Terai, bils, high hills and mid hills. Local chickens are not as large as commercial broilers, but the chickens supply organs, meat and eggs which are believed to be healthier and tastier than those obtained from commercial broilers.

### **Economic Importance**
Poultry farming especially rearing of local chickens is one of the main source of income for the small holder farmers, particularly those in the rural areas. Chickens that produce these eggs and meat are sold in higher market price as compared to commercial poultry products because they are organic and natural products. Also, they demand little capital which means they can be implemented to respond to the needs of low-income earners.

#### **Cultural and Social**
**Significance**
In this country specifically Nepal, chickens are used in the festivals, ritual ceremonies and even traditional healing. For example, sacrifice of chicken is done frequently in different Hindu or Buddhist rituals. In addition, local chicken meat has traditionally been used during celebrations and to cure some illnesses.

#### **Dangers of Local Chicken Farming**
Despite their advantages, local chicken farming faces several challenges, including:
1. Low productivity: Local breeds lay fewer eggs, and have slower growth rates than the commercial breeds.
2. Disease outbreaks: While local chickens are relatively more resistant than the hybrids, they are not free from diseases.
3. Lack of technical support: Some farmers still are unable to avail modern veterinary care and proper breeding methods.

#### **Government and Community Initiatives**
The government of Nepal and different NGOs are advocating commercialised poultry farming of local chicken as a part of the rural development. These include enhanced feed, immunization, and outreach targeting to enhance the yield of breeds that exist within a region without compromising on their stocks.

### **Future Prospects**
Local chicken farming has a great potential in Nepal is sustainable agricultural development. Consumers are increasingly preferring organic foods that are naturally grown locally and across the global market. If appropriate, encouragement and facilities are provided, indigenous chicken farming can help reduce poverty, food insecurity and the erosion of the traditional farming system in Nepal.
